Sonshine Christian Classical Ballet

Classical ballet training sets the correct foundation for all other styles of dance, it gives the students a solid technical foundation that will enable them to achieve well in any style of dance. All dancing under MICA direction, using Sonshine Christian Ballet Syllabus is taught with a "giving of one's life as a living sacrifice" attitude, as all Christians are directed to do in Romans 12. Students are shown and taught how to offer their gifts, through dance and creative expression to Jesus, for his purposes and for His glory.

'Sonshine Christian Ballet Syllabus', currently being taught throughout the world for His glory. This syllabus is of a very high skill level when compared to syllabi being taught in the world, it covers dance skill, applied anatomical knowledge and applied theoretical knowledge in each class. The differences between it and other syllabi are in their purposes, and in the style that has grown out of a worshiper's heart.

Sonshine Christian Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance is used in choreography to help create the necessary pictures and emotions that portray God's Word of truth to the audience and 'Dance His message'. Contemporary dance refers to a collection of technical based modern dance styles with foundations in classical ballet.

Contemporary dance is taught only as an extension of skills to classical students who are in the major grades. Students may be taught skills in choreography of routines for the yearly recital as part of their classical class. There is not a separate contemporary dance class. The technique is drawn from a base in Lester Horton and Martha Graham techniques. Classical students with a strengthened 'core' easily adapt to this extension of dance skills, and have a high enough level of technical proficiency to execute contemporary choreography with safety.

Sonshine Christian Jazz

Jazz has strong foundations in classical ballet. MICA Inc endorses the 'Sonshine Christian Jazz Syllabus'. All music used in the studio and for performance is contemporary Christian music with positive lyrics and Godly influences.

This syllabus has a strong technique base with a consistent use of the barre for the first part of each class. Flexibility is also worked on with 'set stretching exercises' in each level of jazz. Drama

Drama offers young people loads of opportunity to explore ‘who they are’ in our Heavenly Father, to “Act out His Truth” and to minister to Him, using a vast range of the gifts and passions He has given each of us.

As a part of the first half of each year, the dramatists combine with the dancers within Machaneh to minister through movement, word, dance and vocal expression; a fantastic opportunity to experience all that is a full-scale production!

They write, direct, create, design and or produce theatre that ministers to the heart of our King, while leaving audiences changed for the experience. Through the blending of ever-developing confidence on and off stage, with a growing desire to please their heavenly Father, as well as a desire to simply have a whole load of fun, students are prepared for examination as a part of their yearly programme. In drama at Machaneh, students develop skills, knowledge and understanding to contribute to the Kingdom of God in their own distinctive way!

Syllabus & Training

Welcome to Sonshine Christian Dance Academy Syllabi Australia.

Sonshine Christian Dance Academy Syllabi (SCDAS) was formed in 2003 as a division of MICA Inc. and is proudly operated as a non- Profit organisation for the purpose of providing a loving and Godly setting where Christian artists and dancers can learn our vibrant and expressive syllabi, along with providing training in a professional and educational environment throughout Australia and elsewhere.

Our Desire is to inspire students to worship the Lord in dance and draw others to worship Him, in both direct worship and also through the combination of wholesome skill and beauty, which would cause people to rise up and praise Him. The skills of dance learned in using these syllabi are also designed to achieve a level of excellence in this area of the performing arts to be effective in outreach ministry to the unchurched people in our community and beyond.

Our vision is to represent this area of the performing arts in the church, to implant and awaken creative gifts and abilities in others, to teach them how to develop and use these. It is our desire that the S.C. Ballet, S.C. Jazz, S.C. Tap Syllabi and Sonshine Christian Drama, to be used as tools for teaching and developing skill in dance for the purpose of ministry and also for the further development of self-discipline, by constant repetitive work and to help build a stronger more durable mind and Christian character, by being encouraged to persevere until a difficult goal is achieved. Also those students would draw closer to Jesus by offering Praise and Worship in dance and learn to love, help and encourage one another.

Sonshine Christian Dance Academy Syllabi consists of:

  • Sonshine Christian Ballet
  • Sonshine Christian Jazz
  • Sonshine Christian Tap
  • Sonshine Christian Drama

HISTORY:

SCDAS was originally formed as Sonshine Christian Ballet in 1993 as Sonshine Christian Ballet by Kari Taylor, Sonja Staines and Liza Pollok. This syllabus originated and was developed on the Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia.

As the years progressed Sonja Staines and Liza Pollok felt the call of God and moved to the USA. They took with them the Sonshine Christian Ballet Syllabus. Today, Liza and her mother, Sonja, continue their work, making the syllabus available to teachers across the United States. Sonshine Christian Ballet Syllabus is co - owned by MICA Inc., Sonja Staines and Liza Pollock (Staines) USA.

In 1997 Kari Taylor saw the need to have a Jazz, Tap and Drama syllabi. These syllabus' have been written and developed by numerous people with varying qualifications pertaining to the correct study of classical ballet jazz and Tap techniques.

The later amalgamation in 2003 of the syllabi under the umbrella of SCDA and MICA Inc. consolidated the work of the later additions under one umbrella. As a result the syllabi today is placed in a distinctive position catering for all forms of dance using a Christian dance syllabi within the world dance arena.
